![]() ![]() Thanks everyone for your input, ideas, and suggestions to my question. I agree with JWA.the model 74 should have no problems with high speed shorts. The standard velocity LR is considered safe to shoot in the older guns.so I have no issues with firing the High Speed short in my older guns, especially since the alternative is the much lower velocity "target" shorts. The standard velocity CCI LR cartridge launches a 40 grain bullet at about 1070 ft./sec.so there is considerably more energy released on firing the SV long rifle as compared to a HV short cartridge.generally speaking. We're talking about a 29 grain bullet at about 1050 ft/sec. My thinking is that the energies of the modern high speed short is still subpar compared to the modern LR cartridge. ![]() ![]() I do check internals for excessive wear and damage but so far.none to show. On the other hand, I regularly shoot "High Speed" shorts in my old model 24 Remingtons and other old guns that will shoot short and long rifle ammo. But I wouldn't try HV in an old Model 25 Savage or an old Marlin 1892.good way to ruin a gun. But it depends on the gun of course.for example, in my opinion the third model 1890 Winchesters can take modern HV ammo. Usually, the question concerns long rifle ammo, and with LR ammo, the best advice seems to be to be careful about using HV ammo in older guns.especially those made some few years before WWII give or take. This subject (Is it ok to shoot high velocity ammo in my old gun?) seems to pop up pretty regularly. ![]()
